Exploring the Journey of a Sonographer: From Inspiration to Impact

The BEA is proud to feature our newest Bexa Examiner in Freeport, Bahamas Ava Williams-Barr. Ava’s role as a sonographer holds significant importance in healthcare, ensuring accurate diagnoses and quality patient care through proficient ultrasound imaging. Ava’s personal experiences and early aspirations led her on a unique journey towards sonography. Initially drawn to cardiology, her discovery of echocardiography during a summer internship ignited a newfound passion for medical imaging. This revelation prompted her to pursue a career in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, driven by her personal experiences and desire to provide compassionate care and contribute to the well-being of others.

Ava’s journey with breast health began at a young age when she faced a breast cancer scare resulting in a lumpectomy at just 14 years old. Thankfully testing proved the masses to be benign, however the entire traumatic experience stayed close to her heart throughout her lifetime. This experience ignited a passion within her to advocate for early detection and support other women facing similar challenges. Now, as a valued member of the Bexa team, Ava is dedicated to empowering women through early detection initiatives like Bexa Breast Exams.

Ava’s experience with the Bexa training program proved to be transformative. Comprehensive online modules and hands-on sessions under the guidance of Wendy Stoltz, Bexa’s lead examiner, instilled confidence and competence in her sonographic skills, paving the way for personal and professional growth.

Her personal experience serves as a driving force behind her commitment to ensuring that no woman faces breast health challenges alone. Together with her family-owned gym and her unwavering passion for health and wellness, Ava continues to make a meaningful impact on her community in Freeport and beyond.

Impact of Bexa Breast Exams in Freeport

The introduction of the Bexa Breast Exams initiative in Freeport garnered widespread interest and support, resulting in a growing waiting list for exams. Ava’s personal involvement in conducting exams brought a profound sense of purpose, particularly in contributing to the early detection of breast cancer within the local community.

The community’s response to Bexa Breast Exams has been overwhelmingly positive, with patients expressing gratitude for access to this technology. Bexa’s presence in Freeport serves as a vital resource, offering an alternative for breast healthcare within a community still recovering from past challenges.

Additionally, Ava’s dedication to health and wellness extends beyond her role as a sonographer. Alongside her family, she owns a gym in her hometown of Freeport, and has also become a well-known Zumba Instructor within her community for almost a decade, reflecting her deep-rooted passion for promoting healthy lifestyles. Through her work with Bexa Breast Exams and her commitment to health and wellness, Ava embodies the values of well-being and empowerment, inspiring those around her to lead healthier, happier lives.

Conclusion

Ava’s transformative journey has been characterized by growth, fulfillment, and an unwavering commitment to enhancing healthcare accessibility. Guided by her faith and fueled by the love of her family and two children, she remains steadfast in her mission to prioritize the well-being of others and promote health and wellness in her own life.

Sonography, coupled with Bexa Breast Exams, represents a harmonious approach to diagnostic imaging, with the potential to make a lasting difference in patient care. Ava is known for being a Bexa Champion in her community and she is eager to continue to serve our mission: Leaving No Woman Behind.

Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to honor the contributions of Hispanic Americans who have enriched our society and culture. At Bexa, we are excited to introduce our newest examiner, Angelica Ventureno, who embodies the spirit of dedication and excellence in the medical field.

Angelica believes it is incredibly important that all women have access to early breast cancer detection and screenings. Her first memory of cancer screening awareness came from her mom, she came from El Salvador, where screenings are very limited, and she was always adamant about getting her screenings done in a timely manner. It made a lasting impact on Angelica’s outlook of how women from Hispanic backgrounds are at higher risk of breast cancer due to lack of early detection resources.

She says, “I am greatly honored and privileged to be able to be bilingual and communicate these needs to women of the Hispanic community and ultimately provide them with Bexa Breast Exams”.
