A Daughter’s Mission: Bridging Personal Experience and Health Equity

By Cynthia Arellano, Marketing Coordinator – Community Lead, Bexa and Co-Owner & Logistics Lead, In Reverie

As a first-generation Mexican American and the daughter of immigrant parents, I’ve grown up witnessing both the resilience and the challenges of my family and community. Health has always been a deeply personal subject, and for me, that connection is intertwined with loss. I lost my grandmother to cervical cancer. In true form of her strength and selflessness, she chose not to share her diagnosis with us—both to spare us the worry of caring for her and because, in some Mexican cultures, health can be a taboo topic. That silence left a mark on me, showing both the power of family care and the gaps in awareness and access that can exist in our communities.

My mother, ever proactive, gets a mammogram every year and has often told me how she wished I could also take an exam to understand my own breast health. Until recently, mammogram age restrictions meant I couldn’t. That changed with Bexa. Through Bexa Breast Exams, which are radiation-free and available for women under 40, I was finally able to gain insight into my breast health. Experiencing this firsthand was not only reassuring but also calming, giving me peace of mind I hadn’t had before. It reinforced for me the importance of accessible, comfortable, and early detection methods—especially for women in communities where health topics are often stigmatized or delayed.

At Bexa, my role as Marketing Coordinator and Community Lead allows me to turn personal experience into a professional mission. For many, the healthcare system can feel intimidating or inaccessible, particularly in underserved communities. I’ve dedicated myself to bridging that gap through Bexa Equity Alliance’s work—creating culturally informed outreach strategies and ensuring that information about breast health reaches every woman, regardless of background.

International Women’s Month is the perfect time to reflect on why this work matters. Women are often the backbone of their families and communities, yet too often, their health gets put on the back burner. Early detection is key, but access isn’t equal, and health disparities persist, particularly among minority communities like the one I grew up in. Every woman deserves to feel confident, informed, and supported when it comes to her health—and every woman deserves care that respects her culture, language, and lived experience.

What drives me daily is the knowledge that the work we do at Bexa can literally save lives. Hosting breast exams that are comfortable, accessible, and educational isn’t just a service—it’s a chance to change the trajectory of a woman’s health journey. It’s about offering peace of mind, early detection, and the knowledge that someone cares for. For me, it’s deeply personal. For our community, it’s essential.

To women everywhere, especially those balancing multiple roles or navigating systemic barriers: prioritize your health. Seek knowledge, ask questions, and advocate for yourself. And to first-generation daughters like me, remember that our experiences give us a unique perspective and voice. We can use them to drive change, create equity, and support the next generation.

This International Women’s Month, I’m grateful to be part of an organization that honors every woman’s health journey and to contribute to a mission that aligns so closely with my own story. Every initiative, every outreach, and every conversation is a step toward a world where health equity isn’t just a goal—it’s a reality.
