A Mother’s Legacy, A National Movement: The Story of 4

At BEA, we have the honor of partnering with organizations across the country that are leading the charge in health equity, maternal justice, and community care. One organization whose mission has deeply moved us—and one we’re excited to highlight—is 4Kira4Moms.

Founded out of an unimaginable tragedy, 4Kira4Moms was created by Charles Johnson after the preventable death of his wife, Kira Dixon Johnson, following what should have been a routine cesarean section. In the face of devastating loss, Charles turned grief into purpose, launching a national movement to ensure that what happened to Kira never happens to another family.

The maternal health crisis in the U.S.—especially among Black women—is real, urgent, and unacceptable. 4Kira4Moms was founded to address that crisis head-on, providing culturally competent education, community-based support, and national advocacy that uplifts and protects Black and Brown families. Their mission is rooted in honoring Kira’s legacy by fighting for safe, respectful maternal care for every woman, every time.

From Grief to Impact

What makes 4Kira4Moms so powerful is their ability to transform pain into action. They support families navigating pregnancy and postpartum, as well as those coping with the devastating loss of a loved one due to medical negligence. Their programs offer hope, healing, and resources that are often missing in traditional healthcare systems.

Initiatives like 4Kira4Dads create space for grieving fathers to connect and heal. Their advocacy campaigns—like Shame on Cedars—shine a light on systemic failures in maternal care. And events like the Black Maternal Health Block Party in Atlanta bring communities together to access education, wellness resources, and support in a joyful, welcoming space.

It’s not just about awareness—it’s about action. Their work is helping to pass legislation, mobilize families, and hold systems accountable. That’s the real impact.

Lessons in Advocacy

Running a nonprofit born from loss is emotionally complex. The maternal health space is often underfunded, and systemic change can feel painfully slow. But what stands out about 4Kira4Moms is their unwavering commitment to storytelling and lived experience. They remind us that Black maternal health isn’t just a women’s issue—it’s a family issue, a public health crisis, and a human rights issue.

They’ve shown the power of bringing fathers into the conversation, building coalitions across communities, and advocating with empathy and urgency. As someone who works in health equity every day, their model of community-first leadership is both inspiring and instructional.

A Shared Commitment to Equity

At BEA, our mission to expand access and close the gap in early detection and preventative care aligns closely with the work of 4Kira4Moms. We share a commitment to culturally competent health education, equity-driven advocacy, and community-centered wellness.

4Kira4Moms doesn’t just focus on maternal health—they also understand the broader spectrum of care that includes breast health, mental wellness, and preventative education. Their programming often includes breast health workshops and early detection education, reinforcing the idea that true reproductive justice includes every stage of a woman’s health journey.

Looking Ahead

The future of 4Kira4Moms is filled with promise. Their vision includes expanding Paternal Centers of Excellence, launching new digital tools for accessible maternal health education, and building a nationwide network of peer-led support groups. Their ultimate goal? To make maternal mortality in the U.S. as rare as it is in other high-income countries—by centering equity, dignity, and community every step of the way.

The BEA and Girl Con are two powerhouse organizations that have united on a life-saving mission: bringing early detection breast exams to Bahamian women who need them the most. Through this impactful partnership, we will provide critical Bexa breast exams to 1,000 women in the Bahamas by February 2025—an effort that’s not only raising awareness but is also changing lives. Together, we are making a powerful difference in Grand Bahama, empowering women with access to care that is saving lives.

Both organizations were spotlighted for the incredible work we are doing collectively at the Bahamas Red Cross Society Renaissance Ball, which despite the absence of this major fundraiser for the past 17 years, the ongoing work of The Bahama Red Cross under the leadership of President Edison L. Sumner, has never ceased and continues to provide humanitarian aid for the less fortunate.

The theme was, “The Renaissance - Resilient, Renewed, Recharged,” which embodies the spirit of the Grand Bahama Centre, as well as the people of Grand Bahama. The delightful evening of elegance, excitement, and entertainment reset as Grand Bahama’s premier social event of the year.
