Candice Coleman: A Tale of Strength, Advocacy, and Unveiling Disparities

In December of 2022, Candice Coleman embarked on a journey of self-discovery that would profoundly alter the course of her life. While inherently in tune with her body, she was startled to discover a pea-sized lump in her right breast, an unprecedented revelation that prompted a cascade of emotions. Initially, Candice attributed the lump to hormonal fluctuations, only to realize that her menstrual cycle, expected that week, had taken an unexpected turn. It was this pivotal moment that marked the beginning of her unique and inspiring story. 

Candice’s recent conversation with us illuminated her resilience and unwavering openness about her experiences. She graciously shared her personal journey, emphasizing the vital importance of advocacy and self-awareness in the face of life-altering challenges. Despite the hurdles, Candice’s strength shines through, making her not only a survivor but a potent advocate for others grappling with similar circumstances. 

Candice passionately emphasizes the pivotal role of clinical trials in cancer treatment. Her journey took an inspiring turn when she encountered an individual who not only shared similar health struggles but had also undergone a clinical trial tailored for a triple-negative breast cancer diagnosis—mirroring Candice’s own experience. The serendipitous connection with a young Black women provided Candice with a unique opportunity to establish a profound and personal bond. Grateful for the chance to express her appreciation, Candice conveyed that her effective treatment plan owed its success to the groundbreaking clinical trial undertaken by her newfound acquaintance. This encounter underscored the significance of representation and inclusivity in medical research, offering a poignant testament to the impact of shared experiences within the broader context of healthcare advancements. 

The glaring absence of clinical trial opportunities for Black women with breast cancer underscores a critical disparity in healthcare. This omission denies these women the chance to access cutting-edge treatments, hindering progress in understanding how breast cancer manifests across diverse populations. 

As Candice aligns her journey with Bexa Equity Alliance, her narrative unfolds as a beacon of hope and inspiration. Her commitment to advocacy and self-empowerment stands as a testament to the transformative power of sharing one’s story. However, amid these inspiring tales, a stark reality persists — clinical trials, critical for advancing breast cancer treatments, often neglect Black women. 

Candice’s story sheds light not only on her personal triumphs but also on the urgent need for inclusivity in clinical trials. By addressing these disparities, we can pave the way for a future where all women, regardless of ethnicity, have equitable access to the latest advancements in breast cancer research and treatment.

Adenike is currently in the Finance Leadership Development Program at The Cigna Group. She also owns and operates a management consulting firm focused on supporting small businesses and nonprofit organizations.

Adenike has deep expertise for nonprofit finance and leverages her skills to help nonprofits scale and expand their reach. Adenike has worked with a wide range of organizations including the Arts, Education, Advocacy, Cultural Institutions and Youth Development. She has a natural ability to draw strategic insights that aid in identifying solutions to key business challenges, optimize financial processes, and adopting procedures that ensure sustained profitability. Adenike has consistently demonstrated a commitment to excellence and a track record of driving financial success through strategic planning, operational optimization, and collaborative leadership.

Adenike obtained her Master of Business Administration in Corporate Finance and Corporate Strategy from the University of Notre Dame and Bachelor of Science in Finance from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. This week was dedicated to educating women about breast health and providing FREE Bexa breast exams to the women on the vineyard living their best lives. The turnout far exceeded our expectations—we fully booked all available exam slots (and some off of our waitlist), allowing us to scan over 60+ women in just a few days! The demand was high and we were thrilled to provide a peaceful breast exam just a couple of blocks up from the beach.

Christina is an engaged fundraising professional that is dedicated to supporting organizations to provide the best level of support for their community. She understands that many organizations have ambitious goals for their future and growth, neither of which will be possible without financial support to create a sustainable and innovative approach to their plan. Christina is excited to support any organization in their strategic goals and is continuously inspired by each one’s mission and initiatives.

Most recently, Christina was an Assistant Head of School at a private school in Los Angeles. As a new and growing school, Christina took on many roles at the start-up that included fundraising, admissions, curriculum development, and campus expansion. These skills allowed her to learn the building blocks and foundations of any organization, understanding the intricate nature of how an organization operates while prioritizing the mission and core values above all else.

Christina also worked at Philips Brooks School in Menlo Park, and St. James’ Episcopal School in Los Angeles in their development offices. She worked on both annual and capital giving campaigns, reaching financial and participation goals while also establishing moves management systems and streamlining donor processes. Her work in independent schools has been illustrated in high level strategic planning and donor relations.
